Having no insurance and medical tests is a costly mistake

A man from Liverpool was recently handed a hefty fine after taking to the roads without completing the necessary medical tests. According to MyVan, the man was driving his work vehicle without third-party insurance or a valid licence, having been refused the latter on medical grounds.

He appeared at the town’s magistrates’ court and was charged with two offences, pleading guilty to both.

Avoid fines and penalties

Van drivers are often caught out for driving without valid insurance and, on occasion, for not completing the necessary medical tests applicable to their job. If a van driver is found to be in violation of either, they can be fined.

One reason why people may risk driving without insurance is the rising cost of third-party and fully comprehensive coverage. Insurance for commercial vehicles in particular, such as vans, can be extremely expensive.

Some van drivers may try to save money by not purchasing insurance, but this is a risky and illegal decision that can result in significant fines and penalties.

Understanding UK driving laws

Another reason why van drivers get into trouble is due to a lack of understanding of the laws and regulations surrounding commercial vehicle insurance and medical tests. Some people may not be aware of the legal requirements and, as a consequence, may unknowingly break the law.

Be prepared and responsible

Some van drivers may be tempted to drive without insurance or not complete necessary medical tests because they believe they are unlikely to be caught. However, law enforcement agencies are increasingly using technology such as automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to identify uninsured vehicles.

This means that the chances of being caught driving without insurance or not completing necessary medical tests are higher than ever before in 2023.

Failing to complete necessary medical tests is also equally important as it is required by law to ensure that drivers are fit and healthy to operate their van safely. Deterioration of vision, for example, can lead to serious accidents and harm to other drivers.

In conclusion

Regardless of your driving history and experience, it is important to be aware of the laws and regulations surrounding commercial vehicle insurance and medical tests. Staying compliant at all times means having a clean and valid driving licence, van insurance, and the appropriate health checks necessary to perform your job.
