Van driver given a helping hand

A nice little story to start with about other people helping those in need.

Recently, in Liverpool, a driver in a Ford transit was making his usual deliveries to various restaurants in the city. He was manoeuvring around a vehicle that had parked on the corner, which, in our opinion, is never a good place to park, as it obviously reduces visibility quite drastically. In this case, the proof is in the pudding. Whilst trying to negotiate around the corner, another vehicle pulled out of a side street in front of the van driver.

It’s going over!

The driver said that he could feel his van start to turn over, despite his efforts to try and keep all four tyres on the road. The van had unfortunately lost its equilibrium and overturned. A kind stranger ran over to help the driver out of his van – the stranger holding the door open whilst the driver stood on the armrest to get out.

No injuries, just a lucky escape

Traffic in the city was held up whilst the road was closed and a recovery vehicle was called. The van driver was checked over for any injuries – thankfully none, just a little bit shaken by the whole experience. People who had witnessed the incident also went to check to see if the driver was okay.

A little bit of advice for everyone

A lucky escape indeed as it could have been a lot worse. Please don’t park on corners and be considerate to other drivers. Take your time, don’t rush. All of these things could have prevented this incident.

Not such a nice ending

The van driver in this story could have done with taking our advice above. This incident happened in Staffordshire but appears to be replicated throughout the country.

Council workers regularly have to work on our roads and roadsides to repair or replace broken or damaged equipment etc. This is quite a dangerous job, especially if it’s in a high traffic area, as is often the case.

Let them do their jobs!

In this particular case, maintenance crews were carrying out gully cleaning – basically cleaning any waste and debris collected around drains, then using high pressure water jets to dislodge any obstructions. A pretty important job that will prevent roads flooding.

Have some patience and get there in one piece

A very impatient van driver, along with a trailer, decided to ignore all the signs put out by the workers and drove around them, mounting the pavement, coming to a sudden stop then driving off. Unfortunately for him, all of this was caught on the dashcam of the council’s vehicle and handed over to the police.

Staffordshire council has stated they have recorded more than 500 incidents of poor behaviour on the roads towards their workers over the last 12 months. This includes verbal abuse, ignoring signs, traffic lights and road closures as well as driving on kerbs to get past workers.
