We guess everyone has watched movies that involve a van or two. Usually, the van is sinister black in colour, with blacked-out windows, with FBI-type agents watching houses or waiting to follow someone. But here’s a story about a van with a difference. Well, kind of.
Go and live the dream
Back in 2015, a young Australian decided to do something very different. This was due, mainly, to everything in his life crashing around him. This prompted him to leave Oz and travel to the USA to follow his dream, whatever that was at the time.
He wanted to live life a little, rather than just sit behind a desk on the 9-5 treadmill. Skydiving, windsurfing, and going to music festivals were part of this dream, but he really didn’t fancy the camping out in a tent side of things. Instead, he bought an old white van, even though he was aware that there might be some anxious looks as it was a bit battered and worn.
Free candy!
Rather than opt for something a little less sinister, he decided to embrace the sinister side of it and painted “free candy” along the side of the van. In red paint. To add to the effect, he dipped his hands in the paint and added his prints onto the van and inside it, smearing the prints along the way.
It wasn’t long before he started to draw attention to his van (no real surprises there then!), and not just by local residents when he passed through their towns. He was stopped 8 times by the police and a friend, who borrowed the van for a few weeks, was stopped 7 times. At least we know the police were on his case! Phew. Not sure if they got free candy as well though. He did spend over $1500 on the sweet stuff so hopefully, they had a share of that for their troubles.
A happy ending
The best part of this story, we think, is that he met his new girlfriend whilst travelling in his van. After everything had gone to pieces back in Oz, including his relationships, what a great ending to the story. After his girlfriend got over the initial shock of the van, she accepted a ride home in it and the rest, as they say, is history.
A year later, they were still together and decided to sell the van (lock, stock, and a very full barrel) as they needed to go back to Australia.
