It’s all Covid’s fault, honestly Guv

Hopefully, this isn’t something you come across too often, but it might surprise you if you do.

Imagine driving along at night and spotting a van with missing tyres. That’s what happened on the M4 recently. Apparently, the driver in question had been out with friends, enjoyed a few drinks (one too many by the sounds of things), and tried to drive home.

Where have my tyres gone?

How do you not notice you’re driving on rims? We assume being almost twice over the legal limit to drink and drive might have something to do with it. We would hope that someone sober might just notice and stop driving.

The intoxicated individual carried on driving for 10 miles on rims before being stopped by police. Thankfully, the police had been informed by a concerned member of the public on the same road. Fortunately, it was during the early hours of the morning so a lot less traffic around.

Police gave the driver a breathalyser test and discovered he was almost twice the legal limit of 35micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath.

It’s not my fault…

Whilst he admitted the charge, and let’s be honest, it would be difficult to deny the two missing tyres, he blamed Covid for his lack of awareness. This was after testing positive for Covid the next day. He claimed it made his mind “cloudy” and therefore influenced his decision to drive.

His defence argued he decided to try and get to a place of safety, as per the highway code. Not sure what it says about if you’ve been drinking and have two blowouts. Perhaps something should be added about using your common sense as well?

The Prosecutor, however, was having none of that and rightfully stated it was more to do with being drunk than Covid. Nice try though!
